"How to make a success of cities' circular transition?" Newsletter A Side / November 11, 2021

Although experiments and initiatives are multiplying everywhere, the circular transition of the construction sector - responsible for around 40% of CO2 emissions and a third of waste in Europe - has yet to be invented. Is the context now more favourable to the generalisation of the circular economy? What are the innovations that could promote reuse and recycling? And where does the search for new business models stand? This month and until January, Leonard explores, with a series of dedicated round tables, the trends likely to move the lines of the circular on a large scale.
Like a good vinyl record, our newsletters are divided into two sides. Side A analyses a major trend. Side B offers reading advice to go further two weeks after.

Circular economy: a favourable context for generalisation?
Gas, electricity, fuel... at the end of 2021, the price of energy is reaching record highs, as are the prices of materials and raw materials. In this context, the concept of the circular economy is finding a new echo within companies, which also see it as a response to the strengthening of environmental legislation.

How many lifecycles for tomorrow’s buildings?
In order to limit the waste and carbon emissions from deconstruction and reconstruction, the idea of constructing buildings that can be easily transformed, adapted or dismantled is gaining ground. Of the 46 million tonnes of waste produced each year by the French building sector, half comes from demolition and 13% from new construction.

What new economic models for the circular economy?
Re-use of materials, recycling of construction waste and the design of evolving buildings are essential steps towards the circular economy. They still need to be complemented by other models and practices, and made coherent, for a true circular economy to emerge in construction and development.
